“The Plan/e” is an installation composed of a metallic motorized structure referencing the framework of the overhanging roof trusses of Kanal Centre Pompidou and a video that shows the artist and her father attempting to fly with the structure inside the museum. The work explores the possibilities and limits of appropriating and embodying a space that has inherent planes and unseen layers. In the video the artist’s father plays the roles of a mechanic, a mentor and a co-pilot. The body of the artist merges with the machine they have built together and becomes a structure to be oriented and directed. By involving her father, Elen Braga explores how family context can function as an implied structure in the formation of plans, constructed fictions and dreams. Plan/e is therefore not a flight but a structure-within-a-structure, a trussed narrative, a plan for the desire to fly.
